Occupant-Oriented Decarbonization Strategies: Combining Healthy Buildings and Deep Energy Retrofits

With federal-, state- and organization-level requirements mandating changes towards a low-carbon society, facilities and project planning teams are facing challenges in the push to reach Net Zero and carbon reduction goals. New construction, by default, is being built with low-carbon strategies in mind; but what can we do to ensure that our existing buildings are optimized for health while retrofitting them with low-carbon infrastructure? This brief discussion will highlight some of the existing building energy analyses, deep energy retrofit strategies and healthy building considerations owners can make to shift towards energy efficiency upgrades to not only meet carbon-reduction commitments, but optimize for building occupant health and wellbeing.
