Jim D’Aloisio has over 30 years' experience as a consulting structural engineer, mostly at Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt. He became a Principal of the firm in 1992. His responsibilities include the company management and staffing oversight, as well as management of project design and development.
Switching voices, I've springboarded from structural building design to include the inpact on structures on building energy performance (through the envelope) and developing an awareness of the carbon-equivalent footprint of building structures. Fun green strategies that I've used include frost protected shallow foundations, structural insulated panels (SIPs), insulated concrete forms (ICFs), and developing an arsenal of details to minimize thermal bridging, including off-the-shelf brick supports (loll). I push the proper use of fly ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag in concrete for structural applications, for the CO2 reduction. The potential to reduce GHG emissions is huge - it's an exciting time to be an engineer and push this very, very important design parameter. Professionally, I do structural and façade building condition reviews and forensic investigations. I'm a trained Infrared Thermographer, a presenter for the Urban Green Council's Energy Code training, and am currently a field test away from having my BPI Building Analyst certification.
