What's a Living Wage?

11/04/2015 - 10:15 to 11:45
10:15 am to 11:45 am
Room/Location: Upstairs

A cornerstone of any sustainable business is fair wages and benefits for employees. “Fair” needs to be defined in relation to specific job responsibilities and to other employees’ compensation, but it also needs to be defined in relation to the larger social context - in terms of whether the wages we pay are sufficient for our employees to actually get ahead, not constantly scramble to keep up. The Living Wage Calculator was developed by MIT Professor Amy Glasmeier to help organizations and policymakers evaluate their wage scale in this broader context. Among other organizations, she has worked with IKEA (http://www.marketplace.org/topics/business/meet-woman-behind-ikeas-livin...). Prof. Glasmeier and Bottom Lines member Dan Kolbert will teach us about the philosophy and methodology behind this tool and how most effectively to use it not only in our own businesses but also in our general Triple Bottom Lines advocacy work.
