Alafia - Passive House at Scale

Part two features Dattner and SWA discussing the sustainable elements integrated into the design of Phase 1 of Alafia and lessons learned through the comparison of two large passive house buildings C1/C2, and C3.  They will also discuss some of the challenges of construction at this scale including the process of blower door testing one of North America’s largest PHI-certified Passive House projects.

Speakers

Kate Doherty provides project assistance to the High-Performance Building Solutions team at Steven Winter Associates. She conducts energy modeling and 3D building modeling for a range of building types pursuing Passive House certification. From feasibility stage through construction completion, Kate provides design and modeling support for clients while organizing Passive House certification submissions. Additionally, for Passive House International (PHI) projects utilizing SWA’s certifier scope, Kate supports an accredited certifier with model reviews and providing comments to the client. Her experience at SWA, with a wide range of project types including historical retrofits, multifamily, and commercial use buildings, allows her to be most effective in supporting the team.

Deniz Secilmis: A New Yorker, Deniz Secilmis is committed to bringing sustainability, design, and economy to the forefront through her work. She enjoys seeing projects through from start to finish—beginning with the big picture and getting into the details of design and construction. She has experience working on a breadth of projects with her focus on High Performance and Passive House buildings.
