Why I Participate in BuildingEnergy NYC

by Ken Levenson

08/30/2017 - 17:06

As someone who is deeply involved in Passive House building, participating in BuildingEnergy NYC enables me to work closely with people from other areas of the sustainable building industry. It provides me with new, thought-provoking perspectives and helps me to grow my knowledge networks.

I am curating the content for 2 out of the 24 conference session at this year's event on Thursday, October 12, and I hope you'll join me! You can view the full list of conference sessions here or register for the event here.

Don't Let Thermal Bridging Undermine Your Building's Performance: An Interactive Demonstration of Pitfalls and Solutions

9:30am - 11:00am As building energy codes become stricter and we understand the necessity of continuous insulation, previously neglected thermal bridges are now being brought into the spotlight and recognized as a potential Achilles heel of enclosure design. Thermal bridges can undermine insulation values and in so doing cause discomfort, condensation and moisture damages to the building. This session will explore how thermal bridges are identified, analyzed and captured in whole-building energy modelling. Illustrative examples will highlight key trouble-spots in typical buildings. An interactive demonstration with various thermal model software programs will provide the opportunity for attendees to propose and see in real-time the impact of design changes on thermal bridging.

Speakers: Ed May (BLDGtyp), Andrew Peel (Peel Passive House)

Risky Business? The Reality of Making Money Making Passive Houses

11:30am - 12:30pm Conventional wisdom says that high performance buildings are expensive. That needn’t be the case. From affordable to market-rate housing, Passive House projects are making financial sense, managing risk, and making money. How is this being accomplished? What are the proformas and the results? Where is the risk? What process and design innovations are necessary? Affordable and market-rate projects from Pittsburgh and New York City will inform this in-depth discussion. These are cost-effective, scalable solutions – just what our earth and its fragile climate need from the built environment.

Speakers: Ben Igoe (JBS Project Management), Laura Nettleton (Thoughtful Balance), Brandon Nicholson (NK Architects)
