Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Position Summary:

Based at our Midtown Manhattan office,  the Mechanical Design Engineer designs, implements, and manages mechanical building upgrades in complex multifamily and commercial facilities using their understanding of various mechanical systems including but not limited to: heating, ventilation, air conditioning, domestic hot water, and process load systems. After conducting thorough assessments of existing buildings’ systems, the Mechanical Design Engineer creates a detailed set of design documents based on buildings’ needs and/or previously developed energy conservation measures. The mechanical design engineer then facilitates the bid process, notifies all applicable contractors when a job is awarded, works with the client and contractors to provide contract assistance, and oversees construction of the project.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Supports in the management of incoming contracts and assigns projects and tasks accordingly to mechanical design team members
  • Supports in the review process mechanical designs using prior experience and knowledge of construction codes to ensure proper operation and compliance
  • Conduct site surveys of buildings to determine existing mechanical systems to evaluate feasibility of complex projects
  • Make suitable equipment selections based on existing building conditions and desired design parameters
  • Create construction documents that depict complete scope of work and are suitable for filing with the NYC Department of Buildings (NYC DOB)
  • Direct experience designing mechanical systems typically found in NYC buildings, including but not limited to central chilled water, condenser water, hot water, domestic hot water, and steam central plants, air mechanical and distribution systems
  • Direct experience filing with New York City Department of Buildings, performing Special and Progress Inspections, conducting tabular energy analysis
  • Proficiency with New York City Building Codes
  • Proficiency reviewing new construction design documents, performing building-wide design and ASHRAE 90.1 minimally energy code energy models, accurately completing the Energy Star New  Construction application process
  • Create requests for proposal (RFPs) that convey scope of work to potential bidders and help facilitate the bidding process
  • Communicate plans and participate in meetings with contractors and clients, such as management companies, building owners, and building staff
  • Coordinate meetings throughout the duration of projects to ensure the successful completion of complex projects
  • Assist others by using prior experience and knowledge of construction codes to ensure compliance of existing building mechanical systems
  • Assist others by using prior experience and knowledge of construction codes to ensure compliance and proper implementation of proposed building measures
  • Oversee and train junior employees in on-site data collection, evaluation of existing mechanical systems, and feasibility of proposed measures
  • Support in maintenance and ongoing improvements of existing analytical tool templates and design procedures
  • Collaborate with management and senior staff to develop unique area of specialty

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent work experience
  • Previous 5+ years of continuous design and/or project management experience related to complex building mechanical system upgrades
  • Understanding of energy efficiency concepts, HVAC systems, and renewable energy systems
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in Autodesk AutoCAD
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency with NYC building codes and accurately showcase their proficiency with required NYC Special and Progress Inspections and energy code analysis
  • Must be able to accurately demonstrate experience with various load calculation and sizing techniques
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office with significant expertise in Excel
  • Certified as OSHA-10 prior to or within 6 months of employment
  • Travel primarily within New York City

The salary range for this role is $100,000-$130,000.
