More than four-dozen electric, hybrid-electric vehicles drove from New York City to Washington, DC, during Clean Air Week, May 12-19, 2000. Thousands of people, including over 6,000 students came to see the vehicles at one of the many festivals held in New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Washington, DC.

The Honda Insight, the first gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle on the U.S. Market was shown off by American Honda Motor Company and 10 Insight owners. Here a group of Hondas are shown on display in Washington D.C.

Ed Dempsey, of Dempsey World Record Associates, who holds the world electric vehicle land speed record of 245.5 miles per hour, drove his Insight to victory and captured first place in the Production vehicle category.

At the finish line ceremonies in DC, Mr. Robert Bienenfeld, Director of Alternate Fuels Marketing and Sales of American Honda congratulates Mr. Dempsey and several of the other drivers on the Honda Insights in the 2000 ATdS.

General Motors' second generation EV1, a battery-electric vehicle using GM Ovonic nickel metal hybrid batteries, took a very close second place. While its very respectable driving range of 224 miles did not match the Insight's range, the vehicle earned high points for low greenhouse gas emissions, which were half that of the best hybrid vehicles. This vehicle was driven by its owner, well-known NASCAR racecar driver, David Swan.

DaimlerChrysler's electric EPIC minivan was voted the winner of the "Consumer Acceptability Award" by a panel of distinguished judges representing the press, for the second year in a row. DaimlerChrysler also displayed their pre-production hybrid Darango, a sport utility vehicle.

In NYC, Ford displayed their Th!nk, a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle, with a plastic body.

|
Solectria Corporation, of Wilmington, MA, who has dominated the Production category for many years, was represented by several top placing entries. Their Solectria NiCad Force, entered by the Connecticut Partnership, received the award for "Greenest Car for Sale," by having the lowest greenhouse gas emissions. The 40' electric Blue Bird school bus, which was entered by the New York Power Authority, drove the course flawlessly. The Blue Bird bus uses a Solectria drive train.
