2002 Tour de Sol:
The Great American Green Transportation Festival
Route Description
The 2002 running of the TOUR de SOL: THE GREAT AMERICAN GREEN TRANSPORTATION FESTIVAL will commence on May 12th in Baltimore for 2 days of Technical Testing and Festival activities. Following the Festival, the Tour will travel directly to Washington D.C. (driver’s choice of either Route 95 or Route 1 – (approximately 43 miles) where we will hold our official kick-off ceremony.
The first leg of the Tour leaves DC heading east on Route 214, passing by Capitol Heights before turning North on Route 704 (Martin Luther King Jr. Highway). On Rte. 704 we'll travel Northeast through Maryland into Seat Pleasant, Highland Park, Huntsville, and Carsondale. Near Buena Vista we'll merge onto Route 450 heading East into Collington, Staples Corners, Arundel Ridge, Lusby Crossroads, and Three Mile Oak Corner before we wind up in Annapolis.
After our triumphant drive through Annapolis, we'll head North on Route 435 to Route 648 and 179 passing by Skidmore on our way to Sandy Point State Park (approximately 41.5 miles).
Following our Festival in Sandy Point we'll resume our Eastern heading on Route 50, crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Across the Bay, Route 18 beckons us East through Stevensville, Chester, Grasonville, and Queenstown. At Centreville its north again onto Route 213, traveling through Starkey Corner before we turn east on Route 544. A turn north on Route 290 will take the Tour through Crumpton, Chesterville and Lambson before we join Route 213 at Galena. Georgetown, Fredericktown, Cecilton and Cayots dot our route from here into Chesapeake City (approximately 68.5 miles).
After a restful night exploring quaint old Chesapeake City, the Tour will head north on Route 213, crossing the Chesapeake City Bridge heading straight for downtown Elkton. Here we'll veer to the Northeast on Route 279, entering Delaware and passing through College Park and Newark, where we'll pick up Route 2, keeping our Northeasterly course. Passing by Roseville Park, we'll journey through Choate, Marshallton and Prices Corner, where Route 141 takes us north yet again. Continuing northeast through the town of Fairfax, we'll turn north on Route 261 and pass through Talley's Corner and into Pennsylvania at Zebly Corner. Booth's Corner is next before turning east on Concord Road at Chelsea. At Village Green, we'll head north once more on Route 452 encountering Glen Riddle before turning east on Route 1. Route 1 takes us directly into Media precipitating a turn North on Route 320. Finally, a jog to the east on Route 3 at Broomall will hurtle us directly to our destination of Philadelphia (approx. 62.5 miles).
This Route is for the slower/one-person vehicles. Most of the vehicles will take the 95 at Elkton and proceed straight to Philadelphia.
A terrific Festival in Philadelphia sends the Tour on its way Northeast once again. Crossing the Ben Franklin Bridge on Route 30 East, we pick up the King's Highway (also known as Route 537) in New Jersey just North of Camden and Cherry Hill heading East through Merchantville, West Moorestown, Moorestown, Hartford, Masonville, Hainesport and into Mt. Holly. Here we turn North onto Route 628 passing through Jacksonville, Columbus and Hedding before we head East on Route 660 for a short time. Soon we join Route 206, speeding us through Bordentown and directly into Downtown Trenton for another wonderful Festival! (approximately 40 miles)
The final leg of the Tour is not a scored leg. We will be taking the New Jersey Turnpike North out of Hightstown all the way to the George Washington Bridge, which will take us onto Manhattan and the Henry Hudson Parkway South. The Parkway turns into the West Side Highway and will take us directly to our final Festival location at Pier 84 in the Hudson River Park. All vehicles that are not highway worthy should be trucked to NYC. (approximately 70 miles for a Tour total of approximately 320.5 miles)
