Toyota Motor Sales USA The Toyota Prius is a five-seat hybrid-electric sedan that combines the range and performance of a gasoline engine with the silence, efficiency, and clean running of an electric motor. The vehicle never requires external source recharging. Based on Japanese tests, carbon dioxide exhaust emissions are 50% lower, and carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and nitrogen oxide emissions are 90% lower than gasoline engines. Over 20,000 have been sold in Japan. The Prius went on sale in North America in July of 2000. It can be test driven at Toyota dealers nationwide and ordered through them on the web. It gets approximately 50 miles per gallon (mpg). The price is $20,450. |

American Honda Motor Company The Honda Insight is the first gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle to be sold in the United States. This two-seat coupe gets 70 miles per gallon (mpg), and it meets Californias stringent ultra-low emission vehicle (ULEV) standards. It was endorsed by the Sierra Club and heralded in the Green Book by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. Priced under $20,000, it is available through Honda dealers nationwide. Honda will sell 6,500 in 2000. |
