Housekeeping and Introductions

We’ve been doing some belated spring cleaning at NESEA, to prepare for bringing new staff on board, and to reconfigure the office so that those of us who need quiet can have it, and those of us who work together most often can be in close proximity to each other. One of the things we have done is to donate the NESEA library to the Energy Efficiency/Renewable Energy program at Greenfield Community College.

As a book lover, it was hard to part with these treasures. But it was a good lesson in letting go to make space for something new. We’ve created beautiful new work space. And the truth is, by housing the books at GCC, we’ve made them more publicly accessible than they were here at NESEA. They can serve our community, and the community at large, better at a public institution than here in our building, which doesn’t really host regular meetings or gatherings. We’re grateful to our friends at GCC, and to Christine Copeland, in particular, for arranging to house our collection.

On another note – you’ve probably gathered by now that one of our priorities for the coming year is to find new and better ways to engage NESEA members and to provide them with valuable tools to grow their business using social media. As one step in that process, I’d like to introduce you to Roger Sorkin, of Sorkin Productions. Roger is a really talented video producer and, as a sponsor of BuildingEnergy11, he captured wonderful footage of longtime and new NESEA members talking about what NESEA means to them, and the value of the BuildingEnergy Conference. We’ll be working with Roger within the next few months to turn that footage into one or more promotional videos that NESEA can use on its site, on YouTube, and elsewhere to tell our story.

So, as you might imagine, Roger is very savvy at using video online to help organizations tell their stories. He also has a passion for the work that NESEA and its members do. Filming at BE was a real opportunity for him to “drink the Kool Aid,” and he’s hooked. We’re now referring to him as our first ever “sponsoring member” (which may soon appear as a new membership category for NESEA, who knows?). In fact, he’s in the process of completing a deep energy retrofit on his own home, and is just starting a project to document the US Military’s response to climate change.

Roger has offered to serve as a resource to NESEA members – to share his insights on how they might use video to effectively tell their stories and grow their businesses, and to share with the community, using video, his experience with the deep energy retrofit process so that NESEA’s practitioners might learn how to make the process easier from the perspective of one of their customers. Check back for his posts and enjoy!

Welcome to Travis and Rayna

Things have been quiet on the NESEA blog lately. That’s not an indication that we haven’t been busy (yes, mom, I know that’s a double negative!) To the contrary, I have felt so swamped that it’s been hard to catch my breath and update the community. I’m going to try my best to do so with a series of short blog posts over the next few weeks about what the staff and I have been up to.

At the top of my list is to introduce you to two new members of our staff, Rayna Heldt, our membership services coordinator, and Travis Niles, our communications and development coordinator. We have brought them both on board as part of our 2011 strategic plan to help us increase NESEA’s reach into new communities and to help us serve our current membership better.

Rayna has (officially) joined NESEA staff after working for us on an informal basis for about a year. After volunteering at BE10, she arrived at NESEA central to assist planning the 2010 Junior Solar Sprint. Since then, she helped edit last years’ Sustainable Green Pages, and was also BE11′s Registration Coordinator. She has an MSc in Anthropology and Development, a Certificate in Baking Arts, and a BA in Liberal Arts with a concentration in anthropology, poetry and philosophy. She currently lives in Charlemont, MA where she keeps a tremendously over-ambitious vegetable garden and spends most of her free time cooking and listening to public lecture podcasts. She is interested in the connection between people, culture and the environment, and at NESEA, sees the relationship between people and their built environment as a key to securing environmental and economic sustainability. She is thrilled to be the point of contact for membership and will be reaching out to the membership soon for any and all feedback you are willing to share! Travis comes to us from the ACT Volunteer Center. A native of upstate New York, he received his BA in History from Wells College in 2009 and came to Massachusetts to serve as an AmeriCorps VISTA member. He discovered a passion for outreach and networking while directing the volunteer center’s operations and promotional campaigns. Always desiring to be on the cutting edge, he worked to bring ACT and its non-profit partners up to speed by using web tools, social networking platforms and the booming mobile market to supplement under-performing traditional marketing efforts. He firmly believes in applying these same principles for us to “build energy” for all of NESEA’s programs. Thoughts about the two new NESEA "coordinators"

It was heartening to see NESEA seeking candidates for two positions that I have always considered central to the success of our community and the organization that supports us. Having thought (and fought) hard about both membership and communication for over two decades I’d like to catch up with this favorable moment and offer my perspective on the prospect of establishing and growing these positions.

Let me say first that I consider NESEA at its heart a community of committed professionals. Membership in this community has two essential characters. There are those, that I call “the tribe”, who consider their association and alignment with NESEA’s purpose essential to their professional identity – we are “NESEA people” and we share a common understanding of ideas and practices that we have learned and developed together over many years. These are the folks who plan and present at our conferences and events or who gather over lunch or meet in the halls at a conference to discuss and debate what we are learning together. These are the folks who form our chapters and spend countless hours planning for and convening their local NESEA community. We know these folks because they have found a way in. What we need are more diverse, line of sight points of entry to “the tribe”, especially for those in the second category.

This other set of NESEA members are those who “choose” their membership because the conference fee discount is structured to assure that “choice.” While this strategy assures a high membership rate for the organization it offers a fairly poor toehold for those members to value their membership in or commitment to NESEA, and certainly offers no invitation to become involved or more fully engaged. Some of these members will drink the Kool-Aid, make connections, and discover a route to join the tribe, and most of these “members” probably value the NESEA experience, but this (otherwise shallow) membership strategy needs to provide a more deliberate and conscious opportunity for potential members to actively choose to be part of our community and recognize how they might participate with their peers. It looks like now we will have somebody in a dedicated staff position to pay attention to this need. Hooray!

A robust membership strategy is really a community strategy. It includes that initial point of entry, which we might call recruitment, and follows that immediately with a process of orientation (what I am suggesting is absent in my comment above). When defined as a membership strategy, the next phase is retention, which to my mind runs the risk of focusing on a the narrow metric of number of members. If instead the Membership Coordinator were to understand their role as “Community Coordinator” membership alone is no longer the measure of success. Instead the Community Coordinator recognizes that membership is a starting point for an arc of participation over many years in potentially many roles, both active and passive, all thoughtfully structured and organizationally supported to assure that the experience is always vital, fulfilling, and meaningfully contributes to professional growth and contribution. I would call this ongoing phase of member coordination “development.” I have previously recommended Amy Jo Kim’s useful description of this as the “social scaffolding” that can be recognized in any robust and active community. I see hints at this in the job description and am hoping to infer that this role aspires toward this larger purpose.

Communication. Now there is a word! I am confident that, with Mitch Anthony as our partner, there is a discipline about messages and audiences and ambitions that recognizes the determination and persistence, the resources and strategic alignment, and the relentless focus that the scale of campaigns (and I expect there will be many) require. I have been admiring the judicious pace that our new generation of leadership has employed; consistent and patient progress is leading us step by step in what sure feels like a common direction. What a relief!

Effective communication requires skill and too often assumes that messages sent are messages received, messages conceived are messages desired, relationships established are relationships sustained, who we think we are is who others say we are, and that what we do is what actually matters to an intended audience. In other words, as emblazoned over the door of design legend Milton Glaser’s office: “Art is Work”.

My hope is that NESEA’s new Communication Coordinator is wise to all of this. I especially hope that they recognize that internal audiences are as important as external ones. In this case both our member community and its organizational staff are as essential audiences as those in the circles radiating out from this internal constituency. We are the ones with the most immediate fascination and interest in who NESEA is, what it does, and why that matters. The song we sing to the world about that needs a good beat and solid harmony.

“If you practice sustainability, this is where you belong.” I consider this the fundamental value proposition of the organization. It’s result (exemplified by the character and output of our membership) is our point of differentiation and exceptional credibility: “Our members consistently set the highest standards for advancing scrupulous practice.” We are, and have been for nearly four decades, devoted to developing a robust and responsible energy economy and proving it can be done by doing it. I’m looking forward to that message reverberating within and without the organization.

Finally, I am pleased to see these positions characterized as “coordinating” rather than “managing” these two activities. For me it is more than a semantic distinction. A manager takes control. A coordinator assures that a system is engaged to succeed, not always by achieving the ends themselves, but by making certain that everyone who can contribute to that success is involved and organized with others to achieve shared goals. I hope the new hires will act accordingly.

Its been a long journey to reach this new edge. There was a lot of bushwhacking, wandering down rabbit trails, steep climbs and hard weather to endure to get here. I feel like we have reached the shore and are launching a solid vessel across new waters. Its good to see our new captains assemble the needed crew. Here’s to the next stage of this remarkably important journey.

On silo busting, bridge building, and social media . . .

Wanted to bring you all up to speed on what’s happening with the NESEA strategic plan, and catch those of you up who might not even be aware that we have a strategic plan!

The board adopted a new strategic plan in May. The plan sets forth a number of priorities for the coming year. But rather than bore you with you a dry list of bullet points relating to communications and branding, strategic partnerships, membership and chapters, metrics, etc., I thought I’d bring you up to speed on a few of the things I’ve been working on in conjunction with the plan that excite me most.

First, we’re breaking down silos and building bridges. Such cliché language, such over-used expressions. What they mean in our case is that we’re looking at NESEA as a solar system, and BuildingEnergy is the sun. For many people, BE is NESEA and vice versa. So part of what we are doing is reevaluating all of our programs with respect to what works well with BE: great opportunities to network with and learn from a multidisciplinary group of professionals, a “whole systems” approach to energy efficiency and renewable energy, the opportunity to share the results of proven case studies . . . the list goes on. We’re trying to add a bit more of the BE vibe to our other programs, and bringing our other programs to BE, both figuratively and literally. For example, this year we’ll hold our first educators summit at BuildingEnergy. For years we’ve been offering excellent teacher training programs on energy efficiency and renewable energy, but we’ve not created opportunities for educators to network and learn from and with other NESEA professionals. This year, we’ll have educators attend sessions geared toward K-12 science curriculum, but will also invite them to take in a few of the traditional BuildingEnergy sessions. We’ve known for years that teachers involved in our K-12 training programs are often the strongest advocates for introducing energy efficiency and renewables into our schools. Let’s equip them with the tools and the passion to be evangelists for a larger audience of students and their families as well.

Second, on the sponsorship front: we looked at NESEA’s sponsorship packages and found ourselves really uninspired. We also did a lot of research into the sponsorship packages that other, like-minded organizations were offering and were similarly unimpressed. Then it struck us that we’d never really gone out asked our sponsors what they wanted from their partnership with NESEA. Duh! So one of the first things we’ve done is to schedule meetings with a few of our key sponsors to hear from them. We held our first meeting this week with BuildingEnergy sponsor Conservation Services Group. They gave us lots of ideas of really do-able things that would add value for them. And more than anything else, I think they were delighted just to be asked. Just this meeting set us apart from the other 100+ organizations and/or trade shows that seek money from them each year! A great opportunity to build the relationship and learn more about the needs of some of our key members in the process. We’ve got a few more of these meetings set with other sponsors over the next few months, which I’m hoping will be equally valuable.

Third, (and last for now), on the communications and branding front: We know we need to be doing a lot more with social media to keep our members in the loop and to attract potential newbies as well. This blog post is one of my first personal efforts in that regard . . . and I have to say it’s a bit terrifying to try to speak in my own voice, and to figure out what’s relevant to share. I’d love for this forum to be a dialogue . . . but then again, I don’t want anyone to disagree with me . . . ever. (Just kidding, of course – working with this highly engaged and opinionated group sometimes requires me to have a thick skin!) LET'S TWITTER – Why We Should & How We Can

To Twitter or not to Twitter, that is the question.   Let me tell you why I think WE should.

Obama Tweets
In addition to my work in public relations for sustainable energy, I also work in the nonprofit information technology sector.  I saw how Internet applications enabled the emergence of the Netroots – the diaspora of progressives across the country – as a political force that in part served as the foundation for the Obama campaign and its success.

Through work, I toiled on the periphery of the 2008 presidential campaign and was blown away by the way in which the Obama universe networked with one another using Twitter.   Through 140 character missives sent/received from their PDAs or computers, information about what people were doing flowed through networks with lightning speed.

It wound up being the fundamental source for my information needs to pursue my 2008 work agenda and follow the growing Obama campaign.  For example:

  • Rather than peruse blogs, I followed twitter to find out what the trusted sources in my network were reading.  For example, if Katrin Verclas – the queen of mobile applications for political campaigns and nonprofits – tweeted about a great article that she was reading, I would read it.  And then others and I would dialogue (Tweet) about it with her.
  • If I needed a suggestion for an online application, I could tweet my network, and people would shoot me back suggestions, and comment about the pros and cons of each others’ suggestions – all in realtime.
  • If I was waffling about going to a conference but then read a tweet by Micah Sifry, editor of TechPresident, that he planned to attend, I would go.
  • If I was at a conference, I could follow tweets of people at the same conference to find out how a press conference they were attending was going or where they were going for dinner.

It was like that Verizon commercial where you have the intelligence of your network at your fingertips 24/7.

Watching the presidential debates became this online/offline hybrid experience, where I could follow people in my Twitter network like NPR’s Andy Carvin to get their insightful comments, or ask them questions – once again in real time.

Imagining a Twittered Sustainable Sector
Then the campaign ended and now my business is firmly planted in the sustainable sector.  I love it here but I miss the communications glue that bound me together with the nonprofit IT world.  Imagine:

  • How great it would be if you could tweet, “Looking for a product that can perform better than X.  Any suggestions?”  And your network would shoot you back their suggestions.
  • Being able to follow what your gurus in the industry or reading or writing about or what they’re working on, or maybe the problems that they’re having.
  • Getting Tweets from people with updates from a conference that you weren’t able to attend or requesting that they ask a speaker a question for you?
  • Being out of town on business in New Haven and shooting out to your network that you’re headed to Louis for a burger so others could join you.

It is a phenomenal way to broaden your network that turns two-way communications (i.e., “Dan, do you know any good solar installers?) into a community way of communication (i.e, Community, do you know any solar installers?).

Not Another Time Suck
I know what you’re thinking. “Like I have time for this. I’m swamped already.”  Twitter actually saved me time because I was constantly able to skim the cream off the top of my network rather than wallow in the swamps trying to eke out intelligence on my own.   Plus, there’s no law that says you have to spend hours crafting 140 character witticisms.  You can simply check out other people’s posts and when you think you have something to say, dive in.

At the end of the day, I believe that truly deliberative communication takes place face-to-face. I’m still old fashioned that way.  But, online applications, like Twitter, can facilitate that interaction and fill in the holes until we finally meet for that beer or coffee.
