Energy Intern Position at the Community Preservation Corporation starting February 2013

This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to learn about benchmarking and energy auditing, or already has some knowledge of each.  The position will be hourly, 35 hours per week, hiring expected beginning of February, and will be seasonal, probably through the beginning of the summer.  Excellent experience, exposure to the field of sustainability in the built environment, and a great resume builder.

Job Specification

Job Title: Energy Benchmarking Intern (Full Time, hourly, seasonal)

Reports to: VP for Energy Initiatives, F.L. A. Padian, Community Preservation Corporation

Position Summary: The Energy Benchmarking Intern will support both the continuing development and the ongoing management of the CPC Energy Benchmarking initiative,  and  supporting owners’ mandated compliance with Local Law 84 (LL84).  As part of this initiative, the Intern will support CPC in assisting owners preparing for their compliance under Local Law 87, Energy Auditing and Retrocommissioning.  Some assistance may also be required with functions of our Green Financing Initiative (GFI), a loan program focused on making occupied properties financed by CPC energy efficient through building retrofits.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Keeping a log of all buildings that request LL84 Benchmarking via phone, e-mail and mail,
  • Assist owners in collecting required energy information and submitting the information to CPC,
  • File required paperwork and checks to NYC utility companies in order to procure tenant electric and gas usage,
  • Support the implementation of CPC’s Energy Usage Benchmark tools which can be used by the mortgage staff in evaluation of a property and in communication with owners,
  • Submit all data from buildings into both CPC’s Benchmarking system and EPA’s Portfolio Manager in order to meet LL84 requirements for buildings
  • Interface with the Communications Department to drive education through the CPC website to property owners creating awareness and demand for CPC’s products.
  • Submit completed reports to owners documenting compliance with LL84
  • Assist in field energy audits and inspections
  • Assist in writing reports for said visits

Knowledge and Experience:

  • An Associate or Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture or similar building related degrees is preferred or comparable work experience will be considered; students working on such a degree will be considered.
  • Understanding  of multifamily buildings, with knowledge of fuel usage and basic energy conservation principles and techniques,
  • Knowledgeable regarding new and emerging trends in the area of energy efficiency,
  • Proficient computer skills including the use of spreadsheets, especially Excel and other database applications are required,
  • Ability to travel within New York State with some overnight stays required, and ability to work in the field, sometimes visiting many buildings in a day

Compensation: 

  • Dependent upon experience; hourly wage w/o benefits
