Professional Development: Workshops for Educators

Professional development training sessions are offered through NESEA's K-12 Education Department programs, educator conferences, and by request. Please check the general NESEA Event Calendar for upcoming conferences where NESEA staff are presenting. See our Testimonials.

The Clean Green Power Team

Help empower your school and community! Work with your students to strategize how to incorporate green technologies into your school or center. Review field trip options in your region that you can visit with your students to learn about applications in renewable energy use buildings and homes.

Audience: Teachers and non-formal educators working with students in grades K-12
Duration: 1-3 hour options
Notes: Compliments Clean Green Power curricular unit.

Energy Thinking

Energy-where we get it and how we use it can be expected to change radically during the lifetimes of our children. In this workshop we will examine the scientific concepts of energy sources, forms, transformations, efficiency, and heat transfer (conduction, convection, and radiation). Gain a better understanding of scientific principles related to energy transformations, chemical transformations, electricity, and light, which are central to many clean energy technologies. Experiment with electric generators powered by wind, water, and light. Conduct tests on heating model buildings with different types of insulation (thermal and radiant barriers) and sealing leaks. Learn the merits of renewable energy sources and how to present energy issues to your students.

Audience: Teachers and non-formal educators working with students in grades 5-8 Duration: 1.5-5 hour options

Notes: Accompanying curricular units available for MA & PA. Inquire about NESEA designing Energy Thinking unit specific to your state's statistics and learning standards.

Green Schools, Healthy Schools

Green schools is a term given to schools that are designed to be environmentally sensitive, energy efficient, and healthy for their occupants. How do you determine if your school has green attributes? This workshop will define what it means to be a green school, provide suggestions on how your school can become more energy efficient and green up, and through engaging design activities, demonstrate how your school can be a learning laboratory in green school innovation.

Audience: School and education center administrators, teachers
Duration: 3-5 hour options
Notes: NESEA can design site-specific curriculum for your green school innovations and manufacture a tour booklet and training guide for student tour guides who will act as ambassadors for the school.

Model Solar Race Cars & Junior Solar Sprint

This engaging, hands-on engineering workshop provides you with the information and skills you need to guide students in grades 5 - 8 through this well established and highly motivating science and technology project - Junior Solar Sprint (JSS). Your young engineers will deepen their understanding about solar energy, math, physical science, and craftsmanship as they design, construct, and race model solar cars. Teams can compete locally and join in regional and state races coordinated by JSS Event Coordinators. Top winners are invited to the Northeast Junior Solar Sprint Championship in June.

Teachers, non-formal educators, and community mentors, please interested in incorporating JSS into your program or curriculum, check out our Junior Solar Sprint Educator Workshops.

Audience: Teachers and non-formal educators working with students in grades 5-8
Duration: 3-3.5 hours

Wisdom is in the Wind

Introduce yourself to the properties of the wind, what creates it, and ways humans can harness it. Develop a deeper understanding of wind as a sustainable resource. Playful and educational hands-on science activities and projects will provide opportunities to explore possible lessons and units.

Audience: Teachers and non-formal educators working with students in grades K-12
Duration: 1.5-3 hour options
Notes: Compliments Wind Wisdom curricular unit for grades 5-12. A curricular unit for grades K-4 is in the works.

A note about workshop fees:

Workshops are priced at $700 within a 100 mile radius for a 3 hour program (materials not included). Additional mileage costs incur outside of the first 100 mile radius.
