Are visitors free to wander around my property?
No! The purpose of GBOH is to allow visitors to experience and view sustainability and energy-efficiency systems, and it is perfectly reasonable to limit access to only those components you wish to share. Some hosts block off certain areas of their home, often by simply running masking tape across the doorways, to make their tour’s limits clear to visitors.
How many visitors can I expect?
Hard to say. We’ve seen it range from 5 to 150. It depends on the amount of promotion your area has received, the population in your area, and whether there are other host sites nearby. The more people who know about the event, the more likely it is you’ll have a big turnout.
The web site says that the event lasts from 10 am – 4 pm. Am I required to participate for the full day?
No. We realize that six hours of accepting visitors can make for a very long day. While many hosts do remain open for the full six hours, you are welcome to set the hours you are willing to open your building(s) to visitors. However, it is important to clearly note your hours on your online registration form so that you will not have any unexpected guests!
How do I register as a host for Green Buildings Open House?
Visit http://www.nesea.org/gboh/ and click on Host a Tour.
What am I expected to do as a Green Buildings Open House host?
Hosts open their building to the public on the day of the event to show interested visitors what they have done to make their building more sustainable. Hosts explain the measures they have taken, how they did it, and the benefits experienced. Either the host or their appointed person (perhaps the architect or builder) can be available on the day of the event to do this.
Hosts also will be provided with a visitor sign-in sheet. It is very important that your visitors legibly fill in the information on the sign-in sheet. Hosts then return the sign-in sheet to NESEA so we can show our sponsors that many people enjoy and benefit from this program.
Does the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association handle all of the promotion for the event?
NESEA does the majority of GBOH promotion, but hosts are strongly encouraged to promote the event locally in their communities. The event covers a 10-state region and it is not always possible for NESEA to adequately cover every community in our promotional outreach. Promotional materials and tips can be found here
We urge you to spread the word. Tell your friends to tell their friends, post flyers around town, get active on Facebook and Twitter, and notify your local newspaper and/or radio station about this great event!
