Background History of the Wind Wisdom Program:
The program began with a group of Teen Girl Scouts from across Massachusetts who took part in a special program led by the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association and the Girl Scouts of Western Massachusetts called the Wind Wisdom Group. For two weekends, the youth, ages 11 to 16, were immersed in activities related to the rapidly growing clean energy field of wind energy.
Durring this event the teens:
- Toured a wind farm on a mountain in Vermont.
- Visited a successful wind turbine at a coastal Massachusetts town.
- Spent Earth Day on the Cape exploring different political perspectives first hand and working on model wind turbine projects.
- Met with wind energy professionals including engineers, electricians, managers, educators, and even a wind prospector.
In 2007, the activities were developed into a program that all youth could participate in on an independent basis, with a certificate available to acknowledge their work. For Girl Scouts who complete four of the eight activities, there is also a special Wind Wisdom patch, free of charge to Girl Scouts of Massachusetts thanks to grant funding from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative's Renewable Energy Trust Fund. Out of state troops may inquire about patch costs. For more information on Girl Scout patches, click here.
