Description of site:

Green Energy Park of Solar Now, Inc. covers 4 acres and has a play station, a hiking trail, a sundial, and many informational placards attached to a see-and-touch operating 100-kilowatt photovoltaic electricity generating array (solar panels) and a 10-kilowatt wind turbine.

Availability for visits:

The park schedules tours during the Spring through Fall seasons. It is normally closed during the colder months of November through March or April. There is a small tour fee of $5 for students and $10 for adults.

                    

Considerations and opportunities noted by host:

The park would be difficult for wheelchair users. Visitors should dress casually and appropriately for an outdoor tour. Walking shoes are recommended, as opposed to sandals. Visit www.solarnow.org for more information. Nearby places include Dairy Queen, McDonalds, Burger King, Bertuccis, and various pizza parlors.

Directions:

From Route 128: Take Route 128, Exit 19 (Sohier Road/Brimbal Avenue) onto Sohier Road. Continue straight on Sohier Road for just under one mile. You will pass North Shore Community College on your right. The Solar Now office is located in the Beverly High School, at the bottom of the hill on the right.

Description of site:

My cottage was completely renovated, using mostly recycled materials. I have been a single woman doing most of the work myself, including the wiring, framing, roofing, plumbing, painting, landscaping etc. It is a great story and a fun project to see. I am glad to open my house to anyone who might learn something or be inspired. I enjoy having visitors.

Availability for visits:

I am available once a month, any day of the week, between 10:00am and 4:00 pm, 12 visits a year.

Directions:

Take Route 128 North to Route 1A North to Wenham. Take a left on Arbor Street at the big white church in Wenham. Take the third left at Lake Drive. Bear to left at both forks. My house is the third house on right past Leigh Road. It’s a small white house set back from road with porch deck under construction. There is a pink pickup truck in driveway.

Description of site:

We have three solar hot water panels that supply our home with FREE hot water for at least 6 months of the year.

Availability for visits:

Visits are best between March 1st and September 21st between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.                

Considerations and opportunities noted by host:

Researching the topic of solar hot water before visiting is recommended. Nearby attractions include Cranes Beach, Dairy Queen, fried clams, Wolf Hollow, and Russell's Orchard.

Directions:

We live in the Great Neck area of Ipswich. Take Route 1A to the
center of Ipswich at which time one should ask for the Great Neck area. We live on top of a hill that has a water tank on it, so you can't miss it. Call for more detailed directions.

Description of site:

The Loring House is an 1818 antique home and barn on old farmland.
The PV (photovoltaic) system is mounted on the ground, and converts sunlight into energy. There are grid-tied inverters in the basement which enable the electric energy to be used in the home. There are also electric cars and an electric trolley, all powered by the sun.  Additionally, there are electric tractors for lawn care, snowblowing and other tasks.

Availability for visits:

Availability is weather permitting. A sunny, or partly sunny, day with minimal to no snow on the ground. The trolley can run if there is no snow.

                    

Considerations and opportunities noted by host:

The inverters in the basement are accessible only via steep steps. Nearby there is a town common, historical society and museum, two 300-year-old graveyards and a good playground.

Directions:

From the south (Route 93 or 95): Go north to Exit 41, Route 125 North. Go 7.8 miles on 125N to Massachusetts Avenue (North Andover). Take a right onto Massachusetts Avenue at the lights. Travel 1/2 mile. Take a left just after the brick printing museum and white house, the Historical Society. Then take another immediate left on Academy Road. Look for a white sign on right, 84 Academy Road, which is about 1/8 mile from the turn.

From the north (Route 495 or 93): Go to Exit 43, Massachusetts Avenue (North Andover), which is north of the Route 93 and I95 interchange. Go on Massachusetts Avenue towards North Andover 1.7 miles. Take a left just after the brick printing museum and white house, the Historical Society. Then take another immediate left on Academy Road. Look for a white sign on the right, 84 Academy Road, about 1/8 mile from turn.
