Dukes County
Description of site: The Vineyard Energy Project: Our regular solar tour will show you ways that our solar panels makes solar hot water and also makes electricity from the sun with photovoltaic cells. We have solar panels on our ferry terminal, on our schools, and on other sites around our island so that we can bring less electricity from the mainland. You will visits these site and discuss solar energy with a local expert. Additionally, there is a working turbine in West Tisbury that may be visited with advanced notice and as circumstances allow. Availability for visits: School days are best for visits. Some weekends are possible depending on the availability of the guides. All times are possible for the self-guided tour, and no special arrangements are necessary. A tour pamphlet and map will be sent to groups to prepare for the visit. Information is also available on our site: www.vineyardenergyproject.org
Considerations and opportunities noted by host: We live on an island and groups need to make special reservations for the ferry well in advance through the Steamship Authority, especially during the Spring through Fall seasons. Once reservations have been made, groups need to arrive early for the ferry. Call the Steamship Authority for more information. It may be possible to design a short solar tour that is less comprehensive than our regular solar tour. Call or email for more information. This tour may not require a vehicle and would be centered around the town of Vineyard Haven, within walking distance of the ferry from Woods Hole. There are local buses to nearby towns for other activities. See: http://www.mvy.com/islandinfo/gettingaround.html To arrange a visit and interview: Leave a message for Nan at (508) 645-3393 or email her at nandoty@earthlink.net Directions: Take the ferry from Wood's Hole; further directions will be given as needed for each individual trip. Note: When making arrangements, be sure to double check directions with the host.
Description of site: Our house has 20 solar panels mounted on the roof. Availability for visits: Available mid-May to June 2006. Considerations and opportunities noted by host: None noted. To arrange a visit and interview: Email Eric Stricoff at eric.stricoff@verizon.net Directions: From the ferry terminal in Vineyard Haven, take Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road towards Edgartown for 7 miles. At the Triangle in Edgartown, make a left onto Dark Woods Road, which is across from the Square Rigger Restaurant. House # 24 is the sixth house on the left. There is a sign at the end of the driveway. Note: When making arrangements, be sure to double check directions with the host.
