What you can find in this library:

GLOSSARIES with more web links to go deeper into a topic, find resources and educational materials.

HANDS ON MATERIALS to carry out projects with. You might find some through the web links provided, but also, each Girl Scout Council received clean energy education materials to loan out to troop leaders.

THE GLOSSARIES

Sometimes you might have to explore a topic a bit deeper to get an understanding you are satisfied with. Keep asking questions, looking up information and helping each other learn! Here are some resources to help you along. Stop back later, more is on the way.

Clean Energy Glossary

Here you will find many terms that both adults and girls might encounter in their journey through this patch. This glossary is written in simple language and contains numerouse links to additional information.

Energy Glossaries on the Internet

For more terms and additional definitions, you are encouraged to browse some of the glossaries on the Internet that you will find here.

Additional Helpful Websites

Here are a handful of sites especially selected for adult mentors. They offer various resources and curriculum materials to select from.

THE MATERIALS AVAILABLE TO BORROW THROUGH GIRL SCOUT COUNCILS

Each Girl Scout Council received kits of clean energy educational materials of their choice. Please contact the council listed to inquire about borrowing the materials.

The Wind Power Kit

This comprehensive wind power kit offers a fun way to learn about using wind as a source of energy. One project you could do would be to have the girls design wind turbine blades and test which shapes result in the most electrical output. The kit includes:

3 wind machines: a basic turbine, a yawing turbine, and a geared turbine.

1 water pump which can be wind powered

2 multi-testers to test electricity

Curricular materials

These councils have the Wind Power Kit in their lending libraries:

1. Girl Scouts of Western Massachusetts; Contact: Elizabeth Brooke-Willbanks, ebwillbanks@gswma.org or (413) 584-2602 x11

2. Girl Scouts of Spar and Spindle Council; Contact: Bonnie Batchelor at bbatchelor@ssgsc.org or (978) 689-8015 x239

The Variety Pack

These kits come with a few different items:

A model fuel cell car kit to learn about emerging fuel cell technology and make a small car powered by hydrogen. Excellent information on hydrogen fuel cells, photovoltaic (solar) cells, and several science concepts is included with this kit. Middle and high school girls could enter hydrogen fuel cell model car competitions with their creations. See www.H2help.org for more information.

A model house you can build for experimenting with many scientific ideas around saving energy in heating a home.

A basic wind turbine from Kid Wind.

Curricular materials.

These councils have the variety kits in their lending libraries:

The Model Solar Electric Car Kit -Junior Solar Sprint

Have a model solar and battery electric car competition with the cars you design and make ! Teams of girls can also enter their cars for design and speed awards in local Junior Solar Sprint competitions. See the Northeastern Sustainable Energy Association web page at www.nesea.org/education/jss for more information.
