Yestermorrow Design/Build School Announces 2008 Natural Building Intensive Program

Warren, VT – Yestermorrow’s Natural Building Intensive is a comprehensive 11-week program that provides the opportunity to develop a range of natural building skills for owner-builders and aspiring professional natural builders alike. Students enrolled in the Summer 2008 program will help design and build a complete structure from start to finish- a workshop handcrafted from natural stone, straw, timber, and clay right down the road from Yestermorrow in Fayston, Vermont.

There are no prerequisites for entering the Natural Building Intensive program. Applications will be accepted on a rolling admissions basis through May 1, 2008. The program begins on May 10, 2008 and includes tuition for eleven classes, plus an additional 3 weeks of tutorials in between the classes covering all aspects of the building process. Tuition is $5,800 plus food and lodging, or $4,800 without the three tutorial weeks.

Yestermorrow’s Natural Building Intensive is a unique course of study that brings together a collaborative group of experienced and enthusiastic instructors with students in an in-depth, hands-on experience in natural building, from the design and planning stages through the finishing touches.

Courses in Yestermorrow’s 2008 Natural Building Intensive will include:

  • ·        Introduction to Natural Building

The integration of materials was wonderful. I learned everything that I could from this program. A great immersion into the natural building world.”

Yestermorrow offers a number of scholarship opportunities for students. Our goal is to make our classes affordable for everyone who is interested. Residents of the State of Vermont may be eligible for assistance through the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (VSAC)

Non-Degree Grant Program. The application process takes two weeks to a month, and funds are limited. Please contact VSAC in Winooski, VT at 800-642-3177 for more information.

May 29-30, 2008
The Climate Change Think Tank
Mullins Sport Center
UMASS - Amherst, MA

US Congressman John M. Olver, Chair, House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation Subcommittee is the Keynote Speaker at Noon on the 29th. Among the substantial list of presenting companies are Booz Allen Hamilton, SunEthanol and Quixote Corporation. For two days, global experts from academia, government and industry will explore one of the most urgent issues of our time climate change and transportation. This program will address transportations apparent negative impact on our climate; the ways that climate change, in turn, poses serious problems for transportation infrastructure, particularly along coastal roadways, and the possible solutions.

Experts from all over North American will discuss the issue of how transportation is affecting global warming, and what solutions are available within the technology and planning spheres. The media mainly focuses on congestion pricing and/or Cafe standards, but misses the more mundane solutions to mitigating greenhouse gases that are the cause of global warming -- things like signal timing for street lights. There is little focus on the danger global warming poses to highway/road infrastructures, particularly along coastal roads. This is the "looming disaster" outlined in recent government reports.

Speakers are from government, academia and industry. See www.h3bmedia.com and/or www.ecs.umass.edu/umtc/climatechange_may08.shtml for more information.

LexGWAC Speaker Series
Cary Memorial Hall
Lexington,MA

Lexington Global Warming Action Coalition to present an evening with NASA Climate Scientist Dr. James Hansen together with author Dr. Mark Bowen, speaking about the most recent findings on global warming and government attempts at censorship.

On Sunday, June 1, at 7:30 PM, the Lexington Global Warming Action Coalition (LexGWAC) will host a talk by James Hansen, Director of NASA'S Goddard Institute for Space Studies at Columbia University in New York City and world renowned climate scientist.
He will be joined by local author Mark Bowen, who wrote the newly released book "Censoring Science: Inside the Political Attack on Dr.
James Hansen and the Truth of Global Warming."

Dr. Hansen will speak about his latest findings and the pressing need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the next couple of years or face the consequences of a very different climate. Hansen's efforts to speak openly about the importance of reducing greenhouse gases was impeded by political appointees at NASA, who attempted to censor or alter Hansen's reports and writings.
Bowen's book, "Censoring Science" will be available for sale and signing after the talk.

The talk will be held at Cary Memorial Hall, 1605 Massachusetts Ave., Lexington. A contribution of $5 per person is requested, to help defray the cost of bringing top-level climate change researchers and policy-makers to this area. Seating will be limited, so early arrival is
recommended.

Integrated Design/Integrated Development Conference
Plymouth State University
Plymouth, NH

Edward Mazria FAIA, an internationally recognized architect with a long and distinguished career, will be the keynote speaker at the upcoming Integrated Design/Integrated Development (IDID) Conference held at Plymouth State University.

The IDID conference is presented by The New Hampshire Chapter of the American Institute of Architects Environmental Guild, The Jordan Institute, Grante State Landscape Architects, and the Center for the Environment at Plymouth State University. The Conference brings together architects, landscape architects, engineers, developers, contractors, real estate brokers, bankers, building owners, and others to open communications between the disciplines and to promote environmentally responsible, economically compelling design and development.

Mazria's architecture and planning projects span over a thirty-year period and each employs a cutting-edge environmental approach to its design. In 2002, he founded Architecture 2030, a non-profit, non-partisan organization, established in response to the global-warming crisis. 2030’s mission is to rapidly transform the US and global Building Sector from the major contributor of greenhouse gas emissions to a central part of the solution to the global-warming crisis. The goal is straightforward: to achieve a dramatic reduction in the global-warming-causing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the Building Sector by changing the way buildings and developments are planned, designed and constructed. For information on Architecture 2030, go to: http://www.architecture2030.org.

For information on the IDID Conference go to: http://www.aianh.org/idid.asp.
