Home 1

Owner/Builder: Curry Caputo. A homeowner-designed and built 1800 sq. ft. contemporary salt box. Excellent southern exposure for roof-mounted, photovoltaic array and passive solar gain. 21st century technologies: high-efficiency fridge, washer, heating system and insulation. Daylit basement, metal roof, radiant floor heating, all natural wood and floor finishes, minimized northern exposure and no northern windows. Multi-species hardwood floor, custom cabinets - every room a different color. We broke with convention wherever possible.

Home 2

This is a cape style home with about 2000 sf of living space. The home is superinsulated, passive solar, and has a 1500W solar array. This is a relatively new system (house completed in 1997) and we have very efficient appliances. We use propane for heat, hot water, and the stove. The home also has radiant floor heat.

Home 3

This is a cape style home with about 2600 sf of living space for 2 adults, 2 children, and a barn that is home to several horses. The home has 9" walls, with a combination of fiberglass and foam board insulation, and has a 1650W PV array. This is a relatively new system (house is still incomplete but system went in in 1999) and we have some very efficient appliances. We use propane for heat, hot water, and the stove. The home also has radiant floor heat.

Home 4

Moved to Maine 1981, set up pottery studio & built house (still building & still raising 2 children). Off-grid system low budget: 6 panels, 6 batteries & windmill. Ran wholesale pottery business 17 years on separate solar system & wood fired kiln. Recently had to make unfortunate choice to hook new sculpture studio (by road) to grid, but hope to change to alternative energy, as prices decline & availability improves.
