Full-Day Workshops
Wednesday, September 29

Photovoltaics in Buildings (BIPV)
8:30 AM ˆ 5:00 PM

Presenters: Steven Strong and Jeffrey Wootan, Solar Design Associates
Interest in the building integration of photovoltaics, where the PV elements become an integral part of the building, often serving as the exterior weathering skin, is growing worldwide. This workshop provides a highly visual world overview of building-integrated PV activity with a description of component and systems development using built examples from Europe, Japan, and the US as case studies.
RESNET Continuing Education credits available for HERS Providers.

Rebuild America Advanced High-Performance Design Schools Seminar
8:30 AM ˆ 5:00 PM

This workshop, offered by the U.S. Department of Energy‚s Rebuild America/Energy Smart Schools, will provide school design professionals, architects, and school decision-makers with technical information on the planning and designing of environmentally friendly and energy-efficient schools.  Patterned after the Rebuild America/EnergySmart Schools Energy Design Guidelines for High Performance Schools and National Best Practices Manual for Building High Performance Schools, the workshop will cover the elements of HPS and Site Design, Lighting/Lighting Controls, Transportation, HVAC, Energy Modeling, Building Envelope and local programs supporting HPS.  Participants receive AIA continuing education credits in the Health, Safety and Welfare category, as well as complimentary continental breakfast and lunch.  This workshop is sponsored by Technical Concepts, Inc. (TCI) http://www.technicalconceptsinc.com.

High Performance Design:  Team Approach
1:00 PM--4:00 PM
Presenters:
Eduardo De Valle, Kean College; Jason Kliwinski, The Prisco Group; Robert Politzer, GreenStreet Environmental Construction
Constructing a high-performance building requires an integrated approach that involves a multi-disciplinary team of building professionals working together from before the pre-design phase through post-occupancy.  This half-day workshop features a panel of professionals who will walk participants through the essential strategies of building a design team, the design process as a team approach rather than a linear exercise, and what works and what doesn't work along the way using real world examples.  Attendees should leave this workshop understanding how to put the best design team together for their project, what to expect during the design process, and various strategies for dealing with the unexpected.

LEED Training Workshops
The US Green Building Council (USGBC) is providing two LEED (Leadership for Energy and Environmental Design) half-day training workshops in conjunction with the 2004 Mid-Atlantic Sustainability Conference.  USGBC developed the LEED Green Building Rating System and offers the only official training on the system.

LEED for Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI) Training Workshop
8:30 AM ˜ 12:30 PM
Presenters:
  Penny Bonda and Gunnar Hubbard
LEED-CI Rating System extends the LEED sustainable design and construction objectives to tenant improvement projects, primarily in office and institutional buildings.

LEED for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) Training Workshop
8:30 AM ˜ 12:30 PM
Presenters:
  Michael Arny and Steven Piquet
The LEED Green Building Rating System for Existing Buildings is a set of performance standards for the sustainable operation of existing buildings. The LEED-EB criteria cover building operations and systems upgrades in existing buildings where the majority of interior or exterior surfaces remain unchanged.

Please note: NESEA will host these half-day LEED trainings but you must register for these workshops through the USGBC. Please visit the USGBC website at http://www.usgbc.org for more information and to register.

Mold Remediation:  Dumb, Dumber and Dumbest
9:00 AM ˆ 12:00 PM

Presenter: Mike McGuinness, RK Occupational and Environmental Health
How do you deal with a moldy building?  In this workshop, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Mike McGuinness, will present case studies demonstrating the dos and don‚ts of mold remediation.  A nationally recognized expert on environmental microbiology, building assessment, moisture control and mold contamination, McGuinness will also address basic building science, indoor environmental quality, and industry ethics.

PV 101
1:00 PM ˆ 4:00 PM

Presenter: Lyle Rawlings, Advance Solar Products
This workshop will provide a solid overview of PV technology. It could have been called „everything you wanted to know about photovoltaics but were afraid to ask.‰ The workshop will cover grid-tied and stand-alone PV systems as well as battery and inverter technologies.
