Throughout the Northeast, homes and other buildings are taking advantage of clean renewable energy and other green building technologies. On Saturday, October 5 from 10am to 4pm, hundreds of these sites opened their doors to the public for the Green Buildings Open House, featuring the National Solar Tour.
For six years, the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association has hosted the National Tour of Solar Homes in the Northeast, as part of a national event coordinated by the American Solar Energy Society. Last year NESEA expanded the event to include a wider range of commercial and institutional buildings, as well as homes that are using a variety of forms of green building technologies and materials.
The Green Buildings Open House offers a unique opportunity for people to see first-hand how clean energy and green building practices can be put to work. Homeowners and building managers are on site to describe their green building features and answer questions. Members of the public can learn basic principles of green building, such as designing for solar heating ("passive solar), energy-efficient building techniques such as superinsulation and air sealing, safe indoor air quality, and resource-efficient and healthy building materials. Many of the buildings demonstrate how solar hot water is collected and stored, how photovoltaics can be placed on or integrated into the shell of a building to produce electricity, and how wind can be used to generate power. The Green Buildings Open House demystifies green buildings, proving that they are comfortable, affordable, and attractive.
NESEA is organizing the Green Buildings Open House in the six New England States, DE, NJ, NY and PA.
