NESEA Delaware – 2011 Sustainable Delaware Seminar
NESEA Delaware Announces its Annual Sustainable Delaware Seminar
Greening the Community: Tools and Techniques for Sustainability
Thursday, October 20th, 1pm to 5pm
University of Delaware Lewes, Cannon Hall Room 104
Registration is $35, optional lunch an additional $15
Limit 50 attendees
The focus of the in-depth discussion will be the tools and techniques required to achieve a whole-system based sustainability agenda as advocated by NESEA, and how, in practice, those goals coincide with the sustainability agenda of other professions.
Sustainability in three distinct disciplines will be considered for integration into a singular, holistic understanding of “sustainability”:
- sustainability of wellness and health (and health care costs) will be considered in terms of the design of the built environment for livability and walkability, especially for children and seniors;
- sustainability of biodiversity and integrity of nature for its own sake, as well as for the pragmatic, economic value of natural resources and nature’s services;
- sustainability in terms of the environmental impact of the built environment on the climate, energy, water and materials consumption.
This seminar will also consider our interdisciplinary capacity integrate these three sectors of sustainability into the comprehensive policy tools and funding streams that permit elected officials to address these multiple constituencies at once.
Two national leaders on whole-system sustainability will be stimulating the conversation at this year’s Seminar. They are:
- Professor Dennis Andrejko, FAIA, national Vice-President of the AIA, and professor of architecture at SUNY Buffalo, with four decades of specialization in sustainability will discuss how the AIA is connecting-the-dots of various sustainability issues.
- Jose Altiamana, a principal of Philadelphia-based Andropogon Ecological Design and Planning, who also represented the American Society of Landscape Architects on the team that developed the new SITE sustainability guidelines, will discuss the greening of the landscape architecture profession.
3.25 AIA AIA-HSW CEUs are expected to be available to participants through the Delaware AIA and for planners, self-report AICP CM credits will be assisted by Delaware APA. Registration includes break refreshments and a 5-6 PM reception.
In order to provide opportunity for seminar-style professional discussion among all participants, seating will be limited to about 50 attendees. Register soon if interested.
