What does Sustainability look like?

We'd like to invite you to help provide a visual answer to this question.

Sustainability is, and will ever remain, a living process that we are each inspired to understand and aspire to.

By many routes, we arrive at this realization; that sustainability is essential to life.

In our quest to understand and practice the principles that support sustainability, we each must form, and hold, a mental picture of that goal; what does “sustainability” look like?

As we develop and share our experience, these images accumulate. We come to observe a network in which each is a connected center; what is to be growing out of what is.

As we gather the parts we begin constructing a collage that we know, fully assembled, reveals a living whole.

Sustainability's Image

While much has been written and said about sustainability, this effort is intended to transcend those ways of knowing. What we view is not subject to quantification. It instead requires our intuition and imagination. In place of words, the images we seek should help us imagine our purpose more fully. In place of words, these images should help others understand sustainability’s meaning in a clearer and more compelling way.

There are many ways to view sustainability. Each has its perspective and merits. Some images speak for themselves. Others require explanation. We may choose to view what is, has been, or imagine what will be. We can examine the details, or zoom out to seek the whole. Some images should serve as icons; shining examples and quintescent elements that endure. Others, aspirations; exhibiting promise and hope. At least a few should challenge and provoke. All of them should help us all see more clearly just what sustainability is and can be.

So... What do you see?
